Synopsis:
Indian tourist RAJ LUKLA on his first
trip to America to visit his nephew ANDY, inadvertently crosses
paths with a desperate female mobster, VICTORIA GALETTI (Mercedes
Ruehl). Ratted out to the cops by a vindictive former employee,
“Vic” is forced to drop a million dollars cash
in Raj’s carry-on bag en route to Los Angeles. Knowing
she’s going to be met by Detective DARREN CODY (Peter
Coyote), Vic phones her two capos, DE SALVO (Joe Mantegna)
and QUINN (Paul Hipp) to retrieve the money. What seems a
simple pick-up soon becomes a surreal nightmare: De Salvo
and Quinn end up at the wrong apartment, killing its tenants,
two nasty skinheads. When the thugs finally confront Raj,
Andy and their friends, they discover that the money has been
hidden by Andy’s zealously trained mutt of a dog, SOCRATES.
Vic, pressured for the money by her boss, IVA DOLL (Louise
Fletcher) and Cody, driven to desperation by a last minute
job layoff, join the fray. The vortex of events also draws
in “Animal Control Officer” CLEO (Whoopi Goldberg)
and her assistant ROY (Eddie Kay Thomas from American Pie)
for an unexpected and surprising climax.
